Who We Are

In 1914 Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act, giving each land-grant university a mandate to extend the results of scientific research and expertise to the residents of the state, with the express purpose of improving the quality of their lives and enterprises. This unique partnership includes state, federal and local expertise and personnel to provide a nationwide network of information and assistance. Cooperative Extension is the result of this union. In Washington State, Cooperative Extension helps people develop leadership skills and use research-based knowledge to improve economic status and quality of life. Each county has its own office, with a Chair, Agents (or Faculty) and Program Assistants, all of whom work with the public in various venues.

Olga Fusté is the Chair of the WSU Pierce County Extension Office.

The Pierce County Extension Office gears its work towards improving the lives of the county's residents using research-based information and educational activities.These activities include sustainable agriculture, natural resources, food safety, healthy eating habits, capacity-building in families and youth, and environmental stewardship. The Pierce County Office has more than 2,000 volunteers, who are trained by office staff to work in the community in the aforementiontioned areas of interest. We are proud to have our volunteers working beside us to improve the quality of life in the communities in which we serve
