Square Foot Nutrition Project Gets Energetic Nutrition in P.E

Square Foot Nutrition Project (SFNP) is pleased to present a new opportunity to have nutrition education at your school. The health and fitness standards for the state of Washington require students to “acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life:  movement, physical fitness and nutrition.”

SFNP now offers lesson plans for Physical Education teachers that scaffold in the added bonus of basic nutritional concepts, which increases students’ ability to meet benchmarks in Health and Fitness. Lessons include active learning games and fun team activities that help students:
  • Identify how nutrients from a variety of healthy foods affect physical performance and health
  • Learn about the structure and function of human body systems
  • Recognize and understand the benefits of physical fitness and nutrition
  • Improve self esteem, social skills and the ability to interact responsibly with others

A trained WSU Educator visits your P.E. classroom with a one-time lesson that integrates basic nutrition information with your physical education class. WSU Educators use contemporary teaching tools and colorful, safe equipment designed to teach students how to make healthy food and fitness choices. A teacher manual with additional lesson plans and resources is made available for further support of nutrition education throughout the school year.

In order to be federally reimbursed, WSU must verify the nutrition education that occurs in the schools. This is done with time sheets, signed by the participating teacher and principal. This is referred to as “cost share” which is a partnership between the school district and WSU Extension that brings nutrition education to many schools. Schools receive the benefits of materials, training, and enhancements to health, fitness and nutrition education. The districts do not pay for these programs, instead WSU claims the district costs associated with their involvement in the form of salaries and goods and services.

For every one hour of instruction by WSU Educators we ask that three more cost share hours of training be delivered to students by teachers to reinforce learning. Teachers have the entire school year to complete their required hours and may draw upon the lesson plans and resources in the teacher manual or schedule by appointment additional support from the WSU Educator.
