Square Foot Nutrition Calendar Grade 1-3
Square Foot Nutrition Calendar Grade 3-5
WSU Extension staff teaches 12 lessons in first through fifth grade classrooms between October and June. WSU program volunteers, WSU and elementary school staff, and students help with the maintenance of the school gardens.
Children learn about the USDA MyPyramid and essential nutrients that their bodies need to be healthy. They also plant and raise produce to make roasted stir-fry potatoes or a green salad with sugar snap peas. Families are invited to attend on harvest day when the garden produce is prepared. Families receive interactive newsletters with nutritional information and tips on being physically active.
Square Foot Nutrition uses gardening as one of its methods to encourage youth to develop healthy eating habits. Students have an opportunity to grow food from seed, giving them the chance to experience tending a garden through the spring growing season.
WSU staff teaches weekly lessons in the classroom from October through June. Topics include:
- How the USDA MyPyramid can help students choose healthy snacks
- Human Nutrition
- Seed Starting
- Transplanting
- Harvesting
