FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING
Thursday, Feb 7, 2008
Call to order: by Ron Groves at 9:15 a.m. at the Victoria Room
Roll Call Present
Cyndy Dillon, Ron Groves, Bill Horn, Paul Massee, Ann Maughan, Gwen Norlander, Larry Owens, Glenn Rogers, Betty Ryan, JoAnne Slaybaugh, Dottie Tate, Nicole Martini.
Visitors: Steve Whitcher, Pam Draper, Larry Davis
Minutes of the previous meeting
Bill Horn moved and Cyndy seconded a motion to accept minutes as amended.
Treasurer’s Report: Glenn Rogers
- Glenn reported that two checks were written late, which caused the account to have insufficient funds. He will leave a larger balance in the account from now on.
- A committee consisting of Glenn Rogers, Betty Ryan, Paul Masse, and Cindy Slaybaugh was formed to assist Glenn in setting up an annual reporting process.
- Discussion ensued regarding purchase of a second CD. Glenn reported a current cash balance of $71,420.00. We started the year with $61,000 ($18,000 is in a CD). A motion was made by Bill Horn to buy an seven month CD for $20,000, seconded by Larry Owens. Motion passed.
- Nicole requested that the board consider letting interns request funds for implementing outreach projects they are involved with. After discussion it was determined the board will entertain such requests with the understanding that they may become a regular budget item in the future. Community involvement and investment in the projects is also encouraged.
- A request for $400.00 for office supplies was submitted late and approved. The 2008 budget was so amended. Motion was made by Bill Horn, seconded by Paul Massee.
Reports from committees or Representatives
Spring Plant Sale: Joanne Slaybaugh (update sent by email)
- The biggest news is the change in the date to Mother’s Day weekend. This could have a huge impact on our sale but we are not sure how. Master Gardeners have been notified.
- Potting parties are scheduled for March 4, 6, 15.
- Ideas to help make this a great sale are welcome.
Book Sales: Ron Groves: (update sent by email)
- Sales since the beginning of the year have been:
- Training class - $3197.85
- Tacoma Home and Garden show - $7070.80, for a total of $10,268.65
- Ron and Larry have been working with the new team members: Angie Clark, Les and Ursula Stomsvik
- Projected earnings since the beginning of the year are down.
- The remaining schedule for the spring, not including training classes are:
- King County Training Class March 15
- Pt. Defiance June 6-8
- Spring Fair (Puyallup) April 17-20
- MGFWS Annual meeting the following week?
- King County MGFP Plant Sale May 10-11
State Board: Carolyn Brand
- The State Foundations Legislative Day in Olympia was last Tuesday
- Ron Groves, Bill Havens, Marilyn Nelson, and Betty Ryan participated and left reports of volunteer work with District Representatives
- Carolyn Brand was unable to attend due to illness
Unfinished Business
The amended MOA was approved. Motion was made by Gwen Norlander, seconded by Dottie Tate.
New Business

State Foundation: Larry Davis spoke about communication between counties and between WSU and MGFPC regarding such issues as shared speaker lists, good ideas, etc. There is an upcoming conference in June. There is a need for a Pierce County representative to send information for the publication, "Seeds for Thought". He asked for more Pierce County involvement.

Ron suggested a foundation board member be on the Plant Sale committee to possibly take a leadership role and to assist with improving accountability. Bill Horn suggested the Plant Sale committee develop a funding evaluatin process for use after the sale.

Hal Meng submitted a request for $250.00 to buy ergonomically correct hand tools for use at Franklin Community Park. Cyndy made a motion to approve the request, providing the tools be safeguarded. Betty Ryan seconded. Motion passed. That amount will also be added to the 2008 budget.

Pam Draper spoke to the board urging more involvement by Master Gardeners in getting information to schools, and involvement in the Plant Amnesty group, and apple orchards.
- Paul Massee stressed the need for continual communication among members of the master gardener group. Ron suggested a committee be formed to address the communication issue. Larry, Paul, Dottie and Gwen agreed to work on the committee.
- Gwen Norlander said the Office for Solid Waste told her they would like to update and improve the composting area to allow for more public education.
- The date for the 2008 annual meeting was set for November 8.
- Nicole told us the Hilltop Garden is in need of new signage.
- The need for a calendar of Demo Garden activities was noted. Nicole will see if she can find someone to make regular reports.
- Adjournment: the meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m. by Ron Groves.
- Next meeting: March 6, 2008 at the Victoria Room
- Action item: look at “Seeds for Thought” prior to next meeting.
